What it does
ActuallyFreeTools calculates SHA-256, SHA-1, SHA-384 and SHA-512 checksums of text or files for free, using your browser’s built-in crypto engine. Paste a published checksum and it tells you whether a download matches exactly, so you can confirm a file is genuine and undamaged. Files are read locally, never uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose the algorithm and paste the expected value (optional).
- Drop a file or type text.
- Compare the result.
Questions people ask
Which algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 is the common standard for verifying downloads.
What does a mismatch mean?
The file differs from what was published — damaged in download, or not the genuine file.
Is MD5 supported?
No. Browsers do not provide MD5, and it is no longer safe for verification.
Is Checksum & hash on ActuallyFreeTools really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no daily limit, no watermark and no paid tier. Nothing is held back for paying users.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Checksum & hash runs inside your browser, so your files are processed on your own device and never sent to a server. That is also why there is nothing to meter or charge for.
